French Polynesia Fish Barcoding Database_EN


The French Polynesia Fish Barcoding Database contains all the captured specimens during several field trips organised by CRIOBE or participated since 2006 in the 5 archipelagoes of French Polynesia and put it at the disposal of the scientific and citizen communities.

For each classified specimen, a description is given that can include one or more of the following information:

  • Picture
  • Scientific name (usually to the species level, rarely to the genus only)
  • Capture date and method
  • GPS point and depth of capture
  • Size
  • Cytochrome Oxidase c Subunit 1 (CO1) DNA sequence

Fish Database

IMPORTANT
  • The database can be searched using name (genus or species) and a part of the CO1 DNA sequence.
  • This database allows an ontogenetic approach of specimens of approximately 150 species photographed from larvaes to adults!

More than 4,000 individuals that were captured in more than 180 sites in French Polynesia are classified in the French Polynesia Fish Barcoding database.


Ben Fishbase French Polynesia Fish Barcoding database is the result of an important team work collaboration from 3 institutions : (the CRIOBE, the Smithsonian Institution and the GUMP Station) and has been recognized by the French National Research Center through Benoît Espiau's work (CNRS Research Technician, manager of the database) to whom was awarded the Médaille de cristal CNRS 2016 for the quality and originality of his work (« la qualité et l’originalité de ses travaux ») which contributes to the progress of Knowledge, to the fame of CNRS and to the excellency of French Research (« contribuent à l’avancée des savoirs, au rayonnement du CNRS et à l’excellence de la Recherche française »).
